A journey through a life of books

You’d Look Better as a Ghost by Joanna Wallace

September has been an incredibly busy month and I, ashamedly, find myself behind with my reading and blogging commitments. A new term and new classes are one thing, but my eldest has headed off for the first time to university, so I’m suffering somewhat from anxiety and a feeling of empty-nest syndrome, so I am hoping everyone will forgive me for my tardiness in posting this review!

It is time for another Random Things Tour, and this latest book was fabulous! I love a thriller/crime novel, so this was absolutely perfect for me!

The Blurb

‘Delightfully shocking and irreverently funny’ – JANICE HALLETT
‘Everyone must read this book’ – CATHERINE COOPER
‘If Bret Easton Ellis ever went to grief counselling, this would be just the kind of brilliant book he’d write’ – PHILIPPA EAST

I have a gift. I see people as ghosts before they die.
Of course, it helps that I’m the one killing them.

The night after her father’s funeral, Claire meets Lucas in a bar. Lucas doesn’t know it, but it’s not a chance meeting. One thoughtless mistyped email has put him in the crosshairs of an extremely put-out serial killer. But before they make eye contact, before Claire lets him buy her a drink, even before she takes him home and carves him up into little pieces, something about that night is very wrong. Because someone is watching Claire. Someone who is about to discover her murderous little hobby.
The thing is, it’s not sensible to tangle with a part-time serial killer, even one who is distracted by attending a weekly bereavement support group and trying to get her art career off the ground.

Let the games begin…

My Review

What a book!

Thanks to Anne Cater from Random Things Blog Tours and Netgalley for the advance copy. I thoroughly enjoyed this one!

The premise of this book reminded me somewhat of My Sister The Serial Killer, but this is wittier, more brutal yet, dare I say it, more charming! Think How to Kill Your Family, but with a far more satisfying ending! I loved Claire – as protagonists go, she’s quirky, funny: I’d definitely want her on my side, though! She’s perhaps just a little too handy with her hammer!

The reader can’t help but empathise with Claire – she really has had a dreadful childhood, details of which unfold alongside the main storyline. However, she is a serial killer. Nevertheless, she has the same adorable characteristics of, say, Dexter as opposed to Hannibal Lecter – she’s kind of a vigilante serial killer, and you can’t really blame someone for that, can you? Ok, maybe you can…

I urge anyone to read this book. It was great! I will certainly be looking for more by this author.
